The Influence of Sodium Nitrite on the Anesthetic Effects of Thiopental Sodium

Abstract
In order to investigate the influence of sodium nitrite on the anesthetic effect of thiopental sodium and the interacting mechanisms of these two drugs, catecholamine contents of cerebrum and cardiac muscle, blood methemoglobin content and transaminase (GOT, GPT) activities of albino rabbits were compared after injection of thiopental sodium and sodium nitrite alone or combination of these two drugs. The anesthetic effect of thiopental sodium was observed by measuring the induction time, anesthetic time, recovery time and total anesthetic time (duration from the beginning of induction to the complete recovery from anesthesia).
The following results were obtained by this study.
1 The anesthetic induction time induced by the injection of thiopental sodium was shortened by the pretreatment of sodium nitrite but the anesthetic time was markedly prolonged.
2. The catecholamine contents of cerebrum of rabbit were not-influenced by the thiopental sodium or sodium nitrite injection, but catecholamine contents of cardiac muscle were decreased by injection of both. The catecholamine contents of cerebrum and cardiac muscle after thiopental sodium injection were increased by the sodium nitrite premedication.
3. The blood methemoglobin concentration of rabbit was markedly increased by the sodium nitrite injection alone and the methemoglobinemia induced by the sodium nitrite premedication was decreased by the thiopental sodium injection.
4. The serum transaminase activities were markedly increased by the sodium nitrite injection and increased serum transaminase activities induced by the sodium nitrite premedication were decreased by the thiopental sodium injection.
